2023
Kinetic installation, Hi/Lo & Into The Great Wide Open, Vlieland
Dimensions: 500 × 800 × 800 cm
Materials: motors, prismatic acrylic, wood
SIN▲TθPIUM is an installation that reveals natural wave movements and patterns that normally lie beyond direct perception. Placed in a forest on Vlieland, the work consists of a prismatic window and a kinetic surface that distorts and reframes its surroundings.
The installation is based on the sine wave, the fundamental model for cyclical processes in light, water, sound, seismic and atomic structures, among others. This abstract form has been translated into a structure whose roof slowly rises and falls. When the sun is directly overhead, shifts in colour and refractions of light appear, revealing the underlying dynamics of these natural processes within an artificial frame.
The work examines the relationship between natural and artificial systems and questions to what extent they truly exist apart from each other. By actively influencing the visitor’s visual perception, SIN▲TθPIUM invites reflection on the role of perception in how we relate to nature and to technologically constructed environments.
